Worcester Think Tank takes over LACI for a day!

Tuesday, January 13, the first day of our 8-week session, will be a special collaboration between Worcester Think Tank and LACI. Lauren Monroe and Adam Zelny will be taking over LACI for the day and working with kids of all ages on a multidisciplinary, hands-on project.

Our study groups will run for 7 weeks, starting on January 20. All LACI members and students enrolled in one study group are invited to participate for the full day on January 13.

Keep an eye on this announcement for updates with more details about the project. Without giving anything away yet, we can say that every idea that came out of our brainstorming meeting was thrilling to one and all!

Open House on Tuesday, September 9 at First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury

Please join us for an Open House before the fall session of LACI begins (our start date is September 30) on Tuesday, September 9 from 11:00 -12:00 in our rented space at the First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury. Come see our beautiful art studio, classroom space and more, meet the founders, members and kids and find out more about what LACI can offer your family.

There will be activities for the kids, so be sure to bring them!

Our deadline for registering for the fall 8-week session will be September 16 (if you want to avoid a late fee), so the open house is the perfect time to sign up!

Then, join us at Dean Park’s North Pavilion for a bring-your-own picnic and playtime.

Join us for a ponding adventure as we explore the wilds of Dean Park Pond! We’ll be discovering the ecosystem(s) of a thriving wetland environment while we collect water samples, critters and more. Plant and critter identification, examining water under microscopes and learning about protzoa and other microscopic organisms that live in water are just a few of the fun activities in store for us. We’ll also make our own water scopes, sketch and label our finds in our ponding journals, photograph specimens and wildlife, and leave with a bunch of home extension activities to continue your pond studies.

Plan to arrive around 1:20; we’ll be leaving for our tour around the pond at 1:30 and it might be hard to find us. 🙂

Please bring:
– puddle boots for the adventurers
– digital camera
– a bucket, yogurt container, jar or something to put samples in. We’ll have some collection jars with air holes and magnifiers to share but a bunch of different sizes will be nice to have.
– a half-gallon cardboard OJ or milk container (please bring extras if you have them because some people … like me … may not have these)
– chairs / blankets to sit on

December Mini-Session Field Trips

For our mini-session, we’ll be planning three programs at three separate museums especially for LACI Homeschoolers’ Association. Dates and times to be announced very soon! If you know you definitely want to go on one or more of the field trips, please let us know as soon as possible, since we do have to meet minimums and some of the costs are determined by the amount of participants, even though it’s a flat fee that we pay.

One trip will be to Tower Hill Botanical Gardens in Boylston, MA, for a nature hike and discussion connected to their Holly Days’ theme, “Woodland Magic.” We’ll then eat lunch together in the Orangerie and do a scavenger hunt. Cost will be $7 per child; adults are free.

Another trip we’re working on will be either to the Danforth Museum of Art for a tour and a workshop, or to Fruitlands Museum. Details still being hammered out as we look to find the best bang for your buck!

A third trip we are hoping to put together is to the Gallery of African Art in Clinton, MA. We’re waiting for our contact to get back to us, but we’re hoping for a music and art workshop as well as a tour of the gallery.
